She attributes a military mentorship program she enrolled in upon retirement for providing the foundation for her business. By the end of her 28-year career in the military, she was already assisting 40 authors in achieving their own dreams of publication. “I decided by the time that 2016 rolled around, I was going to retire and do this full time,” said Brotherton. “I had no other aspirations, but then people kept coming to me asking to show them what to do and help them figure it out.”īrotherton formed Blue Dragon Publishing and began assisting other authors with book publication on a part-time basis. “My reasoning was just to publish my own books,” said Brotherton. I wrote about it years later and turned it into my first story.”īrotherton started investigating the process of publishing while shopping around for a publisher for the book. “I had someone breaking into my house, messing with my phones, and writing me letters,” said Brotherton. The subject matter for her first book “The Obsession” was inspired by an unfortunate stalking incident that she experienced first-hand while stationed at her first assignment on Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. Perpetually goal driven, she obtained an undergraduate degree in psychology from Ohio State University and then a graduate degree from the University of Central Missouri while she was serving as a second lieutenant. Navy and, when push came to shove, Brotherton put coaching on the back burner and decided to enlist in the U.S. Both of her parents enjoyed careers in the U.S. Dawn Brotherton spent her childhood years dreaming of one day landing a job as a softball coach.
